Richard Sjolund was born in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Dick then moved to California to work as a biologist for NASA on the Biosatellite Project, and stayed in California to earn a Ph.D. from the University of California-Davis. He joined the faculty of the Biological Sciences Department at the University of Iowa in 1968, and for 34 years he conducted research in the area of cell biology, and taught courses in electron microscopy and human biology.

Photography has been his hobby since childhood. Photography also played a major role in his research, especially in the production of images from light and electron microscopes. He taught photography to biology and medical students at Iowa and maintained a university darkroom. More than 15 years ago he began to equip his microscopes with digital cameras and was an early adopter of digital image production using computers. Dick has retired from his faculty position to devote full-time to creating photographs, and to being part of the current digital revolution in photography. He now teaches once again, offering classes in digital photography in conjunction with camera stores across the state of Iowa.

Dick lives in the countryside just north of Iowa City, Iowa with his wife, Rina, where they share 7 acres of forest and ferns with the abundant wildlife. His studio is in his home.

Dick is a member of the Professional Photographers of America organization and the National Association of Photoshop Professionals. He provides commercial photography services for clients, specializing in web images, photographs for catalogs and documents, and architectural and interior photography.
